Sam Redmore Shares Instrumental Cumbia Cover of Giorgio Moroder's "Tears" In Homage to DJ Shadow's "Organ Donor" (Jalapeno Records)
DJ Shadow expertly sampled boat-loads of artists including everyone from Metallica to Björk across his 1996 break-out debut, Endtroducing..... On an album full of stand-outs and fan favorites, "Organ Donor" has stood the test of time and gradually become a cult classic over the course of the past 26 years. Shadow painstakingly built the track upon samples of Giorgio Moroder's "Tears" from Son of My Father (1972,) The New Breed Feat. Tim & Bill's "Someone" B-side to "Little Bit A Soul" (1967,) and Samson & Delilah's "There's A DJ In Your Town" (1969.) Instrumentally covering the sample source or original track interpolated has become a thing in recent years, as well, so bands, such as Japanese Jazz Fusion trio NAUTILUS have covered "Tears" in tribute to both DJ Shadow & Giorgio Moroder. Birmingham, UK-based DJ, musician, multi-instrumentalist, and Jalapeno Records signee is the latest to take a crack at Moroder's "Tears" in direct homage to DJ Shadow, as well.
Ever since DJ Shadow flipped Giorgio Moroder's "Tears" on his iconic Hip-Hop classic, "Organ Donor," it's been ripe for a Cumbia cover. Redmore provides a unique and welcome re-work like no other. "The original Giorgio Moroder track is something I've played in my DJ sets for a long time. It's always gone down really well, thanks in no small part to the DJ Shadow track "Organ Donor" that so famously samples it. Over the years, I've introduced more and more Afro-Latin music into my sets and this got me thinking about how I could re-work the track to better fit in with what I was playing," Redmore explained within a press statement. "At first, I imagined a fairly stripped-down affair, focusing on that huge organ riff with some tasty Cumbia percussion, but as the track developed and more elements, such as the horns and strings, were added, it grew and grew until became the monster you hear today!" he continued. "Tears" is featured on the B-side of Sam Redmore's latest 7-inch/digital single, "Just Be Good to Me Feat. Andrea Brown, now available on Jalapeno Records.
