Quicksand Announce New Album Distant Populations, Share "Missile Command" Single & 2021 Fall Tour (Epitaph Records)
One of Walter Schreifels' many active bands, Quicksand have returned today with quite a few announcements: they dropped a new single, "Missile Command," from their upcoming fourth studio album, Distant Populations, and announced a 22-date US tour for this fall. Schreifels has spent most of his time since 1986 playing with Dead Heavens, Gorilla Biscuits, Moondog, Project X, Quicksand, RIVAL SCHOOLS, Vanishing Life, Walking Concert, Warzone, and Youth of Today, as well as solo music under his own name. Quicksand's bassist, Sergio Vega, has spent his career working with Absolution, Champions of Sound, Collapse, Deftones, Moondog, and Project Kate. While curent drummer Alan Cage has played music with Beyond, Burn, Enemy, New Idea Society, and Seaweed. Quicksand released their self-titled EP on Revelation Records and followed it up with Slip & Manic Compression on Polydor & Island Records, respectively.
Quicksand broke up in late 1995 and some 17 years later, reunited in 2012 for a one-night only performance, but proceeded to play a number of shows and festivals before sharing their long-awaited third studio album, Interiors, in 2017. Now, Quicksand have returned once more with their fourth studio album, the aforementioned Distant Populations, which will be released on power-house imprint, Epitaph Records. Prior to announcing the sheer existence of Distant Populations, Quicksand released two pummeling new singles, "Iversion" and "Missile Command." Both singles accompanied by trippy animated music videos that appear to have bene animated by Rob Fidel with original illustrations by Tetsunori Tawaraya, which appear to match the album artwork. "Everyone is, on the one hand, so connected with each other and on the other hand, is so far apart," says frontman Walter Schreifels.
"We're checking out each other's social media and we know what everybody's doing; but when we're sitting in the same room together, we're looking at our phones," he adds, [pointing] out the sad irony of it all. Schreifels says "Missile Command" "really kind of focuses on Sergio's whole motif in a very simple way. He & Alan just have this really kind of trademark groove and, I think, that really sings on this one, to me. I just felt like it's a kind of song that is very "us," but we hadn't written it yet." In support of Distant Populations, Quicksand will be hitting the road this fall. The headlining run will begin September 28th in Boston and wrap on October 31st in Philly.
